For 5 days in a row, we took our dog to the VCA in Weymouth, MA because our 10 year old pitbull was having difficulty walking and eventually could not put any pressure on his front paw. After several tests and medications, the VCA said that our dog had signs of cancer and his only hope was to have his front leg amputated. We agreed to proceed but were horrified to learn that once the leg was removed, they determined that it was not cancer at all; instead it was a massive bacterial infection that could have been treated with antibiotics (pills). We were devastated by this news. We had the tissues sent to Angell Memorial in Boston who confirmed it was a bacterial infection and not cancer. The VCA tried to tell us that the leg had been disposed of; even after we told them to save the tissues for another opinion. When we threatened to sue, the tissues were found and sent to Angell. A court battle ensued and we were forced to go to court 7 times in 2009 because the VCA had an incompetent lawyer, in my opinion. To summarize, we paid the VCA nearly $5000 for the ordeal. They refunded us $1300 for the operation because of everything we had been through leading to the operation. We never paid them a balance of $670 and they took us to court. The Judge said we did not owe them anything and he awarded us $2000. The VCA appealed it and had a special Judge brought in from another county (the same county where the lawyer is from). We had a trial. I did not have an attorney and we lost the $2000 we had previously been awarded. I believe that the VCA did this because I have what is known as a Bully Breed (although he is not mean at all). It has been 2 years since the ordeal. Our dog is doing very well and runs and gets lots of exercise each day. It is still hard to see him fall on his face much too often, but I am grateful he is still alive. If anyone is in this position, please get another opinion. They later determined that our dog got the bacterical infection from a cut on his paw and then swimming at the beach. In my opinion, the VCA is a bunch of money hungry doctors.
